The aircraft could fly only straight and level, and the crew could not find a hole in the clouds.  The pilot, Lt G.W. McKay, put the aircraft on AFCE (Automatic Flight Control Equipment) and all the crew bailed out safely.  The B-17 crashed near RAF Bardney, Lincs.
