5/9/2010 9:20:53 AM | Comparing these two photos of Hard Seventeen taken at about the same time (note the mission markers) a couple of differences come to light: The crew photo was obviously taken first (around 23rd September 1944 acording to the official caption), and then H17 has been in for some repair and modification work. Starting small, a patch has been applied under the last N in seventeen, but most notable is that an AN/ARN-5 Instrument Landing System "bull-horn" antenna has been installed in front of the astrodome. This then gives a rough date for the AAF ILS equipment being installed at Deenethorpe, to replace the RAF-supplied Beam Approach System. And just in case I haven't posted it before, an unidentified B-17 (NOT Hard Seventeen, note the late-pattern windscreen) being refuelled at Deenethorpe: TTFN, Paul
