All,

I just completed converting the 401st NARA Section of the old forum to the new format I've been working on. I could use a hand making sure I didn't screw anything up. 🙂 All who are willing, simply go here: http://edwardgdanaii.info:8000/401st/New/Gallery/ and explore the links. Look for any picture that don't display, broken links, bad navigation and the rest and then let me know what you find.

Bear in mind this is still a work in progress and there is plenty of stuff that doesn't work, so if you're willing, concentrate on the NARA section, much of the rest of the site is still a work in progress.

And, have a Happy Fourth! Even you Brits! I'm off to the mountains to celebrate how we kicked yer buttes! :mrgreen:

Excelent you are in my head and I in yours ED. I went through each picture and didn't find a problem under the National Archives and I love the way you seperated them out. Am not sure how far you have gone I did find under The Cohin Family had a chart not a picture/ Art and Marion Seder no picture, Dick and Ruth Mettlen no picture and Reunion Hotel had a format problem.

GREAT Effort.

Will drink to that.

Ed:
1. Great NARA photo format. Bigger little photos, and big ones visible together with the little ones, sure make 'wayfinding' easier to me.
2.Suggest noting on the 'Gallery' page that photo numbers used are NARA 'AC' numbers (but there's a different NARA 'laser disc' number for each);
3. Suggest (as look-ahead or wish-list) considering adding a 'caption' tab, to include both the official captions for each photos; plus 401BG Vets' 'notes' like who's who in photos and circumstances recalled;
4. And since 'Category titles' are always somewhat a 'toss-up' - some photos fit in several categories - some really, really nit-pics, or choices observed include:
Jackets: 65508AC flak helmet - move to 'flight'?
Crews: 65522AC football team - move to 'groups' or 'misc'?
65721AC special services - move to 'groups'?
65728AC 'group' - move to 'groups'?
65748AC ground crew? - move to 'groups'?
65749AC service group? - move to 'groups'?
65753AC service group? - move to 'groups'?
65764aAC service group? - move to 'groups'?

Flights: Section title reads 'flight' (singular)
65504AC flak helmet - move to misc?
Informal: 65647AC prop in field - to crashes?
Misc. 65490AC engine fire )- crashes?
65492AC runway collision )
65494AC runway collision )
65494aAC runway collision )
65495AC prop damage )

But this is all 'little-stuff. Your format and functions are great.
I'll drink to that, too. Ka-BOOM!

ARGH!!!!

I was going to announce that I had converted other Gallery images to the new format and was in the process of copying the changes to my server when I discovered (with only seconds to spare) that I actually did it the other way around: copied the old files over my new changes! :evil:

*&@# (*$#9 (*@$ !!!

I just lost a lot of work. I should still be able to fix it, but... darn it!

Thanks for the feedback, all. I'd comment on them, but I'm a little peeved at the moment.

OK, I've managed to fix some of my stupidity. (grumbles) Once again, any who are willing are welcome to review the additional changes and find anything I might have screwed up, just use the link, above. Available now are photos for the Albums and Reunions tabs.

Has anyone explored it using Internet Explorer? I ask because I have problems with it displaying badly using IE and no one has mentioned any problems there. That was some of the work I lost (grumble, grumble): fixing some of the issues with IE.

@ Don

Those things already noted. There is little I can do about them, however, as those are the pictures that were supplied. I left them there as a "placeholder" so that anyone who might have the originals might let me have a copy. There are other missing photos in the additional conversions I've done since.

@ Win:
2.Suggest noting on the 'Gallery' page that photo numbers used are NARA 'AC' numbers (but there's a different NARA 'laser disc' number for each);

You might wanna explain this one to me, Win. I'm not sure if I understand the request. 🙂

3. Suggest (as look-ahead or wish-list) considering adding a 'caption' tab, to include both the official captions for each photos; plus 401BG Vets' 'notes' like who's who in photos and circumstances recalled;

Noted for future enhancement. I might need some help on this one, however. Such as gathering that info up and associating them with photos.

4. And since 'Category titles' are always somewhat a 'toss-up' - some photos fit in several categories - some really, really nit-pics, or choices observed include:

65495AC prop damage )

I converted them just exactly as there were on the original site. Given the 401st's policy on not updating things, I'm hesitant to reorganize them, but will gladly do so with the 401st's approval.

I did change the "Flight" to "Flights" as that was my bad. 🙂

It looks great to me Ed. I have a question though. Can it be fixed where it you click on the picture it will enlarge? I thought that to be a problem in the old web site as I would have to use a magnifying glass to see who some of these people are. Great work as always!!!!

The magnifier appears when the image being displayed on the page is smaller than the image's actual size. Those images are being displayed at their actual size, so no, sorry, I can't make the magnifier appear... unless you actually have larger image sizes. 🙂

Ed: Let me try to 'splain' better with this NARA still photo caption 'print-out' info - this photo's in the Gallery):
65512 AC 3A-12951 Combat Mess, 3-5-45;
(c) ENGLAND: FIELDS & INSTALLATION BUILDINGS. Combat mess hall of the 401st Bomb Group at an 8th Air Force base in England, March 5, 1945.

2nd ID number: The NARA still photo collection was loaned to the Smithsonial (NASM) on laser-disks - this photo on laser-disk '3A', image '12951'. On Jan.1, 1998, the collection returned to the NARA and continues laser-disk search - both ID numbers still leading to the same photo. My comment was to add a note to the Gallery face-page describing what the laser-disk ID number is (without actually including it for each photo in the Gallery until wish-lists can come true). The note should help anyone lucky enough to visit the NARA or get a caption print-out, as well as anyone who has or receives a photo with this strange (but current) NARA laser-disk ID number.

'Links' & Additions: This is a really, really big 'wish-list' item, and I have no idea how to accomplish it. Concern is 'link' vs 'lose' the valuable information now 'there - From simple (old or new) Forum posts to Paul Bellamy's absolutely astounding Buildings then and now presentations.

'Categories': This is such a subjective subject (wha'd he say?), and my comments are so minor, there's no point even considering them during 'make it work' efforts. Save them for a rainy wish-list day.

Hope that helps - great job regardless.
Win

OK, that makes better sense, Win, thanks. And, to that end, if anyone is willing to gather that information for me, I'll more than happily add it to my effort. Bear in mind, however, at this point I don't think there's any guarantee that the 401st will ultimately accept what I'm doing, so... only do it if you want to just for the fun it. 🙂
