Dear 401st Forum: When my uncle, Dana Johnson, completed his training as a radio operator on a B-17, he was a member of 600 B.S. 398 B.G. 3-G1 / Crew E-31, according to his crew photo. However, when he lost his life on May 28, 1944 during a mission over Dessau, Germany, he was flying as a member of Lt. Frederick Windham's crew in the 401st Bomb Group, 613th Bomb Squadron, Aircraft No. 42-102647. Can you explain how this change took place ? Thank You !!!!

At the time that Lt Windham and his crew were with the 398th Bomb Group it was a replacement training unit. That explains why the crewphotos often show this '398 BG' annotation at the bottom, but the crew later ended up with another Bomb Group.
You will be interested to know that recently my book 'Mission 376, battle over the Reich: 28 May 1944'was published. It describes, in great detail, the events of this day, including the heavy loss of the 401st Bomb Group. The crewphoto of Lt Windham is in the book too. I will put up more information on this webboard soon. Kind regards,
