Hey guys, at my local Barnes and Noble, I hit the magazine section, and came across Military Aircraft Monthly (Vol 9 Iss 3), and has a very detailed article about Monday, Sept 11, 1944 with the 100th BG, 8th Air Force. It is a very good read, with lots of nice, clear photo's.
Now, I am not sure if you guys are "only" doing research on teh 401st, but thought that you guys at teh very least would be interested in this article

Here are some numbers I was able to pull off some B-17G's, in flight and in formation no less:
338945 (the 8 MIGHT be a 0)
48614 (the 8 might be a 0 and the 6 might be a 5)

Some close up's of "Mud in yer eye" 42-397834 XR*J and "The Reluctant Dragon", B-17G-75-BD, 43-38011 XR*H

Also tail section of B-17B, 42-102657 that crashed into a school in Kovarska

REAL nice photo, in formation B-17F, 42-30604

The story also has some very detailed info on some other B-17's:
42-31412 EP*G "Mason and Dixon"
44-6089 LN*B
42-97806 XR*D "Now An' Then"
42-97834 XR*J
43-37863 LN*A
43-37880 LN*E
42-97154
43-38076
43-38047
42-102695
43-38043
43-3517 LD*T
42-38161
43-37823 XR*V
42-97334

Anyways, thought you guys might want to know.
