4/4/2009 2:56:04 PM | Here's the double-page spread of photo's of England from the Blue Book: I thought it would be interesting to see if any of the locations could be identified...... Photo 1: Taken in 1944 by Dr Hardesty, the 614th's Flight Surgeon. At first I thought it was one of the ironstone trains heading into Corby steelworks, but they didn't use brake vans. Probably an embankment in the Nene valley between Thrapston and Oundle, but investigations continue. Photo 2: You'd expect this thatched cottage to be easily recognisable...... I'm still looking for it. Photo 3: Again, this location should be easy to identify...... but I haven't found it yet. EDIT: It's Magdalene Street / Bridge Street, Cambridge. Here's a close-up showing the detail, including the name "Cox's Garage" on the turret, US flag on a pole on the wall, and a church tower further down the road. The Fordson trucks parked outside are military/in government use, and the small vehicle on the right is a 5cwt "Tilly". Photo 4: Easy one this, it's Deene Hall. Photo 5: Cottage beside Hill Farm, Benefield. Photo 6: Red K6 phone box, with a church hall or chapel in the background. Another "should-be-easy-to-find" location to investigate. It doesn't match any of the chapels in Oundle as far as I can tell. Photo 7: A bar, could be anywhere in England or Scotland really. Photo 8: Another easy one, it's the main street in Benefield, facing west. The Wheatsheaf pub is on the left behind the phone box. The cottage in photo 5 is off-camera to the right. Photo 9: Oundle railway station. Feel free to post suggestions. 🙂 TTFN, Paul

4/4/2009 7:48:52 PM | Great 'sleuthing', Paul. No.2: Thatched Roof: Isn't there was a thatched roof building nearby (and across the road from) the Wheatsheaf? No.7, the Bar: I hang-out in Pubs, but...could the 'chimneys' be reflections of 'bottles' on the back-bar over the Barman's left shoulder? The 'stepped-edge' atop - reflection and back-bar look similar. 'Nuther round, please... No.8: Main street, Bennefield: Is this 'main street' now the A427? And if it is, wouldn't the photo-view be eastward? Regradless, they're great and I'd love to see their 'now' views someday. Win

4/5/2009 8:17:44 AM | "win-win": Great 'sleuthing', Paul. No.2: Thatched Roof: Isn't there was a thatched roof building nearby (and across the road from) the Wheatsheaf? Could be, I'll have a look on the ground later. No.7, the Bar: I hang-out in Pubs, but...could the 'chimneys' be reflections of 'bottles' on the back-bar over the Barman's left shoulder? The 'stepped-edge' atop - reflection and back-bar look similar. 'Nuther round, please... Well spotted, it is indeed the reflection of the bottles on the bar back. No.8: Main street, Bennefield: Is this 'main street' now the A427? And if it is, wouldn't the photo-view be eastward? It's taken on the junction at the eastern end of the main street, where the A427 turns downhill towards Lower Benefield and Oundle (left in the photo). Regardless, they're great and I'd love to see their 'now' views someday. Win I'll try to pop out later this afternoon for some "Now" photos and post them up. TTFN, Paul

4/5/2009 5:59:12 PM | Thanks. I'll get some better photo's soon, when the light's in the right direction. 😉 I now have a long list of where the thatched cottage isn't....... I know Deenethorpe personnel drank in Kettering on occasion. I wonder if that's one of the bars in the Royal Hotel. I guess I'd better force myself to pop in one day, for research purposes of course. TTFN, Paul

4/5/2009 6:23:10 PM | Hey Paul, When you visit that pub...be sure you have one for me as I was just a little one when we lived in England and my father was stationed at Mildenhall. Not sure I spelled that right though. Jackie
