Found this on the web and wondered if anyone might know the Squadron it belongs to. It is one of those unidentified nicknames.

Sgt. Donald C. Byers, 613th Bomb Squadron, Togglier, 42-97344 Carrie B II, KIA 08/24/1944.

Hi Don,

I found this when I searched for "Miss Wing Ding", seems to check out....

St. Augustine native flew missions over Europe

Mr Andreu does appear as a Bombardier in the Crew Rosters with the 613th BS, so hopefully that's one more aircraft that can be matched to a squadron in the lists.

Continued in next post....

I also found THIS, regarding Bert Maes Jr, who also shows up in the Crew Rosters as a Ball Turret Gunner, again with the 613th BS.

Both guys are listed as part of R.G. Etters' crew.

Unfortunately, for the majority of Etters' Crew's mission list their aircraft isn't named, but it could be possible that Miss Wing Ding was their regular aircraft from the above reports.

Cont. in next post.....

I wonder if Mike Harney, the artist of the reproduced jacket artwork could be contacted to see what photo he worked from to paint the new jacket. I get the impression he had something tangible to work from at least.

Thinking about it, it's likely he used this photo as a source:

Interestingly, while looking for Miss Wing Ding-related info I found a a cropped version of the above photo in a selection of NASM attributed photo's of 401BG A-2 jacket artwork HERE that show some that aren't in the NA A-2 Jacket Gallery.

Sorry for the clunky triple post, but it was the easiest workaround with the current settings.

All the best,
Paul

Thanks Guys, info was good to read. If we could only tie it to a serial number that would be even greater. It did sound like in the articles that it was a common plane with this crew. So I also think there is enough info there to say they flew this plane as there main aircraft.
