Service during the War

Donald enlisted on 11 Sep 1943 in Indianapolis Indiana. He trained in the states with the crew of Lt. Melvin S. Fish which had a 10 man crew. Upon arrival to the 401st Bomb Group crews had been downsized to a 9 man crew. Then Cpl. Byers was transferred to Lt. Maxwell Cain's crew and assumed the Bombardier/Togglier position and was later promoted to Sergeant.

Life before the War

Donald was born 13 Aug 1922 in Marion County, Indianapolis Indiana and was the second youngest of 14 children. He married Betty Fern Thompson in 1942 and had a daughter Donna Fern Byers (1943).
