Sean McDonald 1/20/2005 7:55:07 PM | Came across the picture in the Group Pictoral History showing the chow hall with all the aircraft nose art in miniature and the crews names next to them on the walls. Particularly it looked like the ALSO RAN-STILL RUNNING was right above the big 8th AF picture in,(I'm guessing), the center of the wall. I am trying to pin down what the art was- it looks like a horse or razorback type critter moving at high speed-too hard to tell due to age of pic etc. Does anyone remember the noseart on this plane? Also, does anyone remember if this acft was also known as the CAREFUL VIRGIN or was that a separate aircraft? I have seen a pic of the VIRGINS crew jacket with 22 missions and 2 fighter kills but so far can't find a serial number/name listing or mention in the individual mission reports. THANKS ALL FOR YOUR TIME. S. McDonald |
Fre4d Corley 1/20/2005 8:47:35 PM | "Also Ran-Still Running" was shot down on 11 April 1944 on its seventeenth mission. I don't think they were the same aircraft. |
Sean McDonald 1/21/2005 10:52:51 AM | Mr. Corely, Thank you for the reply, I was curious because I came across a picture of my great-uncle John Daly who was bombardier on the ALSO RAN-STILL RUNNING but the picture was titled "CAREFUL VIRGIN" (may have been mislabled). Are you related to T/SGT Jesse Corely? He had a crewman by that name in his crew-his pilot was Sam Wilson. Take Care. S. McDonald |
Fred Corley 1/21/2005 11:51:31 AM | Jesse Corley was my uncle. Unfortunately, he died inthe Fall of 2003. |
Sean McDonald 1/21/2005 4:23:55 PM | Fred, I am sorry to hear the news. I will inform John. The more I learn, the more it sounds like your Uncle's crew really did some amazing things. Sincerely, BMC Sean McDonald,USCG |
Bob Wilson 1/24/2005 4:24:19 PM | Good Afternoon Sean- My father, LT Samuel P. Wilson, was the pilot of "Also Ran- Still Running. The nose art was a jockey on a race horse. He got the idea from a cartoon "Barnet Google"-1938. They were shot down April 11, 1944 in the Hanover area. Hope this helps. Bob Wilson |
Sean McDonald 1/24/2005 5:52:09 PM | Bob, Thanks so much for the info, it has been very helpful. I have been able to gather quite a bit from the archives except for pics. In addition to a scrapbook of my great-uncles service, I am building a model with my 8 year old son and we are going to make the markings as close as possible to the ALSO RAN-STILL RUNNING. Thanks Again! Sean McDonald,Savannah GA |
Bob Wilson 1/25/2005 3:16:42 PM | Thanks for the response. I would appreciate any information you have found on the aircraft markings for Also Ran-Still Running. I am trying to gather as much info as possible to create a prohile drawing (24 x36)with crew info, aircraft info and training, missionns flown and pow info. Any info or assistance would be appreciated. I would be glad to give you a copy when it is completed. Thanks BVob Wilson |
Sean McDonald 1/26/2005 9:51:38 AM | Bob, Do you have a postal address? To date I have a picture (rather poor) of the chow hall art which shows the nose art from a distance. I also have a photocopy of a picture of the BETTY J with number 3 on fire leaving formation on the same raid the ALSO RAN STILL RUNNING went down on. Be more than happy to send to you. I have access to the mission reports and squadron history for every mission they flew up to and icluding the mission of 11APR44. I live very close to the 8th Airforce Museum and it is no problem to zip over there for anything specific. Sean |
