After WWII, he went into the reserves and then was recalled to active duty for Korea. After the Korean War, he went to work for the Air Force as a civillian at Kelly AFB, in San Antonio, Texas. During his career at Kelly AFB, he took many trips on business. During one of those trips, he met a man who supposedly flew several missions with the 401st as a photographer. This gentleman, whose name is lost to time now, had a number of photos of the 401st in action. Several of the photos are the standard "flak" shots, bomb release, etc. and identifying aircraft is difficult at best. However, there were a few that clearly identify a number of B-17's with the 401st. Some of these B-17's have no other known photograph. After months of "negotiation", my dad finally purchased the original photographs from this gentleman and I am working on scanning them now. The B-17's that can be seen are as follows: "Little Boots" - IY-B (nose art visible) "Fools Luck III" - SC-D "Nasty Habit" - IN-L "Ol' Massa" - IN-N "Carrie B-IV" - IN-D no name or art visible (tail number: 43-38862) IN-N "D-Day Dottie" - IN-S (Note: To Jackie Sharp Sheflin & Donna Sharp Noble: I know you guys have been looking for this one!) If you guys would like to include these photos in the website, let me know where to email them. 🙂

9/28/2006 10:15:06 AM | Cody, If you were close enough to Florida I would shake your hand or give you a hug! Would you mind making a hard copy of the D Day Dottie and mailing it to me? I will gladly pay for any costs and mailing. I can then copy it again and send a copy to my sisiter Donna. We have looked long and hard for any info on Dottie and the plane Dad was shot down in. I am wondering if the extra crew photo I just found should also become part of the photo gallery? I have already made copies and as soon as I can have the crew members identified...I would be happy to share a copy with the 401st. Just let me know someone... Jackie

9/28/2006 11:14:47 AM | No problem Jackie....I will get you a hard copy. In the meantime, I will email a copy of it to you. Would you want an 8x10 hard copy? There are three planes in the picture, as you will see. D-Day Dottie is the "top" plane and her markings (IN-S and tail number) are clearly visible when you zoom in. By the way, I think you should email a copy of the crew photo to the webmaster. The more photos of 401st personnel on the site, the better off we will be! 🙂

10/10/2006 9:24:23 AM | I emailed a number of photographs to both Kele and Dale and couple of weeks ago, but have not heard from anyone. I still have more to send, but want to make sure everything is getting where it is supposed to go first. Now that I think about it, I have not noticed Kele online for awhile. I hope all is well.
