5/24/2008 8:10:59 AM | Hey After making and researching 13 of the 95 Macr's I came to the conclussing that there are many mistakes regarding the names of the crew members. I am very sure that the most errors are on the 401stbg.org site. Not the complete names are wrong but there are a lot of spelling errors. I would be pleased to help if someone could correct them. e.g. Radio Operator S/Sgt J.P. Moneale should be Morreale etc.etc.etc. Is there a explanation of these errors? Andy

Andy Well Andy this has been brought up before. Unfortunatley the Board of Directors awhile back discussed that and they voted not to change what Vic used as the basis for the 401st BG Historical records. Don

5/30/2008 3:29:40 PM | Gents: Two things 'jump-out' for the 401BG Board to consider (for Oct. Reunion?) about this and similar threads: - - How about including a Vic Maslen tribute/bio/photo on this Website to recognize his incredible records of the 401st we now enjoy; and - - How about a solution to this ever-recurring issue - info accuracy (whether Vic's, MACRs', Bluebook's, Photos' or other 401BG resource/reference). Regarding the former, consider that Vic had none of the (spell-check'/grammar/cut-&-paste) editing we take for granted now - for any of his 'herculean' volumes; and Regarding the latter, common writing devices (like footnotes) solve 'info accuracy' by not only preserving the original info (and source), but by opportuning inclusion of updated or corrected info & source as well - without losing the 'trail', and regardless if the original and revised conflict). Here endeth my 'soap-box' for the day. Win Bryson

5/31/2008 12:24:16 PM | People, Ok listen up although I am tiring somewhat of the way the forum is going I have to have my two pennyworth on this. I have it on exceptionally good authority that Mr Vic Maslen obtained the micro fiche records from none other than Hal Bowman himself and worked incrediblly hard to transfer the data into a readable flow. So cut the crap, give the guy credit, cut him some slack and take it as read, as bloody good, pukka gen and get on with it, good night. Yours Disallusioned.

6/1/2008 7:03:45 PM | Phoenix: We seem to agree Vic's extraordinary effforts and accomplishments. So suggesting Board/Web-site recognition seems positive thing to me. I've used some of those microfiche records (from AFHRA) and their inconsistent image quality makes Vic's accomplishments that much greater. And I hope we agree that no one - Col. Bowman, Vic, you and me included - is infallible. So suggesting how to make good records better, while preserving the original, would seem to be positive also. Encouragement is the only intent. Sorry if any connotation appears negative - especially toward Vic. I am proud to have met him (in Portland). Win

6/2/2008 12:47:24 PM | Win, No hard feelings meant from this end I just lost control for a bit, unforgiveable I know. I shall resign from the forum anyway and concentrate on helping the boys over here maintain the memory and be available to guide visitors, which is what I got involved for in the first place, showing gratitude on this side of the pond. Best wishes to you

6/3/2008 10:05:06 AM | Listen guys? Here's a suggestion... there is no reason why the records cannot be corrected _on our own_ without the boards approval. And, in so doing, it's quite possible the board might actually change it's policy. Just something to think about.

6/3/2008 10:39:35 AM | Guys, I agree with Ed. As important as information will be for future generations, there is no reason for all of you not to gather and correct the information as it becomes available and hold it until such time as perhaps the 401st records can be corrected. The sheer size of the amount of records made during a time of war is bound to produce mistakes here and there. But with technology the way it is and the dedication of those who are trying to preserve this information it seems to me to be vital to correct miss-information as we go. At some time in the future the board may agree to accept the changes in the interest of correcting history to reflect what might otherwise have been lost forever. Just my 2 cents worth. Jackie
