I've just pulled up the list of 401BG related books held by Northamptonshire Libraries, which includes some publications not listed on the main website.
I'll post the them here for reference:

612th Bombardment Squadron (H), 401st Bombardment Group (H): squadron history: Maslen, Vic., 1986.

613th Bombardment Squadron (H), 401st Bombardment Group (H): squadron history: Maslen, Vic., 1986.

614th Bombardment Squadron (H), 401st Bombardment Group (H): squadron history: Maslen, Vic., 1986.

615th Bombardment Squadron (H), 401st Bombardment Group (H): squadron history: Maslen, Vic., 1986.

The Aircraft of the 401st Bombardment Group (H). : Gibson, M.L., 1979.

I'll have a dig around and see if I can find the ISBN's for these.

All the best,
Paul

Hi Paul,

That's interesting, I guess I'll be dusting off my library ticket again!! I am just reading George Menzels book and constant reference is made to Vics' histories and I was wondering about those publications, so just when I thought my collection was getting off the ground you've done me a nice curve ball!!

Hi Paul
Been to Corby library today spent a couple of hours studying "The Blue Book", must save my pennies and make sure I don't miss out on e-bay again, had to request it though as they keep it locked away! Also enquired about the squadron histories thier computer said "no-go" so over to you with that one!
All the best

Hi Dale,

Glad to hear you've got to browse the Blue Book.

Looking on the library OPAC database (same as they use on all the terminals in every library in the county) for Vic's squadron histories shows the following:

Maslen, Vic. - 612th Bombardment Squadron (H) : squadron history.
Location: Corby
Shelfmark: Local Collection 940.544973
Copies: 1
On loan: 0

Maslen, Vic. - 613th Bombardment Squadron (H) : squadron history.
Location: Corby
Shelfmark: Local Collection 940.544973
Copies: 1
On loan: 0

Maslen, Vic. - 614th Bombardment Squadron (H) : squadron history.
Location: Corby
Shelfmark: Local Collection 940.544973
Copies: 1
On loan: 0

Maslen, Vic. - 615th Bombardment Squadron (H) : squadron history.
Location: Corby
Shelfmark: Local Collection 940.544973
Copies: 1
On loan: 0

They are all indexed under 940.544973, same as the Blue Book, in the Local Collection (Reference) section.
Corby's computer must have been having a bad day, although I must admit I've not seen them there myself. I hadn't been looking for them before though.

All the best,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I'll make a note of that and revisit, though I have to say there was very little available on the reference shelves at Corby which prompted me to enquire and even then it was a back room search. So while not wishing to dought the qaulity of the staff, with the references you have supplied I shall try again and let you know. Mind you Corby library is not a patch on that of my youth!!!!

All the best

I was in Corby town centre with some free time this afternoon, so I stuck my head into the Library.

Browsing through the Local Collection, I was pleasantly suprised to find the following books:

Portrait of a Flying Lady: Geo. Menzel
Fated to Survive: W P Maher
Birds of a Feather: H Bowman

But what I really wanted to find was Vic's squadron histories.

Although the attendant was adamant they were out on the shelf (they weren't), after she went to look herself she had a rethink and disappeared into the stores.
A mere 3 minutes later, I had all 4 volumes to read. 😃

So, if you wish to read them just ask at the info desk, now that they know where they are.

Paul,
Thats good news when I asked back in the summer they were most insistant that those volumes had never been anywhere near Northamptonshire Libraries? must be different staff, just hope they are on duty the next time I visit.

I did mention to the attendant that someone else had been in looking for them last summer with no joy.

When she asked me for the book title I wanted, I asked her to search OPAC for "Author: Maslen, Vic" and pointed to the first 4 of his 5 titles when they came up on screen.
When I handed them back in at the Info counter I let her know that there would be others likely to come in to view them, so keep them handy. 😉

BTW, it was as drafty as usual up there today, the wind was blowing back in through the windowframes.

TTFN,
Paul
