2/23/2010 1:20:29 PM | For two years I've been looking for my father in laws bomb group and squadron with no success. His name was John H. Miller nicknamed "tiny" from Chicago Il. His birthdate was Nov.8,1918. He was a ball turret gunner on a B17. He had gunnery training in Yuma AZ. Other information that we do have is his serial no. was 36 685 271. He was in the battles at Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.He was a S Sgt. when diascharged in Nov. 1945. Would like to find out what bomb group and squadron he was with and any name of a plane he would have been on.

2/23/2010 3:12:48 PM | Go to this site and print the SF-180 form and fill it out. If the records were not lost during the fire they should be able to at least tell you the information you are seeking. I ran a quick search and didn't come up with a match but that doesn't mean he was not in this Bomb Group.

2/23/2010 3:39:51 PM | Thanks for your response Don but we already went through the records dept. with no sucess they were lost. I forgot to add that he was a ball turret gunner and we do have a picture of him with his group but were told it was probably taken stateside before going overseas. We do have another designation on his discharge papers but were told that wouldn't mean too much it says he was with Sq. C 3014th AAF Base Unit.

If you haven't already checked this site for enlistment info http://aad.archives.gov/aad/series-list.jsp?cat=WR26 it may fill-in a few 'blanks'. And an E-mail to afhso.research@pentagon.af.mil may get you an answer (or path to one) about what the 3014th AAF BU was (and where). (Typically, I've found that a 'Base Unit' operates an Air Base, at which, other commands have/administer other function like training, transit etc. - at that base).
I'd sure like to see your photos of him in uniform and the one you refere to with his 'group' - They may show 'clues', even if taken 'Stateside'.
Do you know what document or info his "service in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe" is from? (With his Service appearing to be late in the Europe War (1944-1945) do you have any info or letters indicating he was possibly part of a 'replacement' crew? A pilot's name would help identify 'Crew, thence Unit).
Lastly, as 'direct Kin', you (and your Wife) are entitled to access to any Vet. records. Have you already pursued that (through the NPRC or VA)?
Anyway, let me know if you can sent photos (scans), and regrrdless, 'good huntinhg' and stay in-touch.
