A friend of mine serving with the RAF in Germany in 1945 came across and photographed this aircraft. According to Roger Freeman's book it came down on the 10th April 1945 shot down by flak and crashed Wilsnack, Germany. Two evaded and seven POW. I wondered if any of the crew are still around today or if anybody can give us more detail, crew names etc.

Check the mission summary for mission 246 - the ship's nickname was 'Heavy Date' - according to that all survived and were captured but 5 managed to escape and returned to Deenthorpe

Alan,

My Dad was Hughie Reiner-he was the co-pilot that day on the "Heavy Date". Their is a listing of the crew in the flight crews section on this site. This was 612BG piloted by Spence. From what I have learned, one crew member (Jim Carson) may still be alive. I have a copy of the "Blue Book" which has a detailed story on what happened that day and to the 5 who escaped.

Hans Shull is building a RC model of this plane and he has some info about the plane and crew on his web site-site:http://hoverhans.8m.com/

I was wondering does your friend know what happened to the wrecakge?

My dad was on the crew that flew Heavy Date prior to Spence's.  Have corresponded with a couple guys that were stationed at Fassberg (the German base where it crashed) after the war - probably late 40's early 50's - and they couldn't remember it being there.  Would be interested in copies of the photos if possible.

Sir,
Have collected quite a bit of info on this plane for my model project. Many photos have come from the people in the group and one from the son of an RAF pilot stationed at Fassberg. Am trying to upload some of my photos to my page but having some trouble. I'm a modeler, not a computer guy. Anyway, If I can help out at all, please let me know. I would also love to see any photos you have of Heavy Date.

Model is coming along well, lots of work left!
Hans
