Hi to you all from England!
I have a small part of this aircraft coded IW-H,from the crash site in lutterworth, leicestershire.
I believe that this aircraft was abandoned by the crew after a fire in the number one engine could not be exstinguished on the fourth of march 1945.
I would be very interested if anyone has a photo or photo's of this aircraft and any further information.
Even better if any veterens remember flying in her or were part of the crew on the last mission. I would like to make a model of her so any info would be useful. You may be interested to know that at the museum in Duxford Cambridgeshire a rebuilt and fully restored B17 is on show and is in the 401st markings of Mary Alice. I am also a member of the supporters club that helps to keep the last flying B17 in England, in the air (Sally B).She is a favourite at air shows over here, but her real function is as a flying memorial and carries out regular flypasts at Madingley cemetary and at the old mighty eigth airfields across the country. She is grateful for any donations that come her way, check out her website for more info www.sallyb.org.uk
Best regards,
Eric.

The B-17 Nose Art Directory indicates no picture of this aircraft.

Nothing listed in Bit's & Pices Heavy Bombers of the Mighty Eighth either.

Eric,

I have a copy of an article which appeared in Aeroplane Monthly, April 1996, which gives a lot of detail on the crash of this aircraft, which crashed near moorbarns farmhouse.

The article is basically about a leather flying helmet, which was found close to the crash site and years later, was re-united with the crew member to which it belonged, namely, Lt Ed Reinhard.

If you would like a copy of this please forward me your address and I will send this onto you.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dave Pearce

Ed Reinhard recently passed away.  Tim Spenser, who found the helmet, is part of the association, but wasn't at the last reunion.  I was able to get a copy of the magazine and have both of them autograph it for me.  Will be giving it to the group...
