| In Some Ways It Doesn’t Seem So Long<br/> <br/> Seventy years ago tomorrow our country was attacked.<br/> From that day until today a whole life time has been packed.<br/> In some ways it seems like yesterday but my, how time has flown.<br/> One day we were teen aged kids, the next day we were grown!<br/> <br/> I had never been off the ground before but to fly became my dream.<br/> My Mother signed the papers but her tears became a stream.<br/> My neighborhood was filled with friends who wanted to do their part.<br/> We all went different ways while best wishes filled our heart!<br/> <br/> On Sunday morning, all hell broke loose at a place called Pearl.<br/> For many this became the beginning of a trip around the world.<br/> For Uncle Sam this propelled our entry into the war,<br/> That started by Hitler invading Poland when no one knew what for!<br/> <br/> America was climbing out of depression and wheels began to turn.<br/> Younger folks volunteered to fight while elders had to learn,<br/> How to get the ships and planes we needed underway at once,<br/> For they would be needed very soon to fight on many fronts!<br/> <br/> In the meantime I began training to fly the big old B-24.<br/> I was still a little guy my feet wouldn’t even touch the floor.<br/> My crew was soon on the way to Europe but somewhere in between<br/> My orders were changed and I wound up flying combat in a B-17!<br/> <br/> Suffice to say that by the Grace of God I managed to survive.<br/> From my twenty-five missions over Germany I did come back alive.<br/> I wish that all the wars could end just like that one did,<br/> In a good economy and jobs for all…thanks from this 88 year old kid!<br/> <br/>                                                           Copyright                   2011<br/> <br/>                                                             Jacob Nathaniel Shepherd <br/><br/><br/>
