I just used FauxUser to do that. It looks like forum subscriptions are working again.

Unfortunately, the style I created doesn't display the buttons needed to subscribe to forums/topics yet, I will fix that. Until I do, here is how you can if you really want/need to subscribe to a topic.

In the user control panel, select "Board Preferences" then change My Board Style to "prosilver." This will allow you to use the buttons to subscribe to a particular forum/topic.

Next, select the topic you wish to subscribe to, scroll to the bottom and look for "subscribe topic." Once you click on it, you should be emailed anytime someone replies to that topic.

You can also manage these subscriptions in the User Control panel by selecting "Overview" then "Manage Subscriptions."

Enjoy!

|- | '''EDanaII'''

3/6/2010 8:36:02 PM | Oh, and... don't forget to change your forum style back to 401stBlue3 after you've subscribed to a topic... unless you just don't like it! 😛

|- | '''donaldbyers'''

3/6/2010 8:38:24 PM | Good work Ed,

I will wait till you get the buttons back in the new style then to change back to prosilver. Again You Da Man!!!

Don

Sgt. Donald C. I duh Adman! 😉

All,

The subscribe buttons have been restored. You will find them at the bottom of the page. They show up when you are in a Forum or within a Topic and allow you to subscribe to either. You are also subscribed to a topic when you post to it, so these buttons are for subscribing to anything you'd like to follow but haven't posted to. Use them wisely; use them well. 🙂

As always, if you notice anything that might go wrong as a result of this, don't hesitate to let me know.

Ed.

|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/9/2010 6:16:26 PM | Well, I'm now receiving notifications for both PMs and subscribed threads.
The only issue is the length of time it takes for the notifications to be sent.

As an example, within the last hour I received a notification time-stamped 22.15hrs GMT 9th Mar 2010, informing me of a PM that Bill sent me at 10.24hrs GMT, 8th Mar 2010.
In the meantime I'd read it, responded to it, and received a reply by e-mail.

A mere second before, I was sent a notification for a post in a subscribed thread made at 15.07hrs GMT 7th March.
I await with interest to see when the next notification will arrive, as there was another post to the thread a few hours later. 😉

All the best,
Paul

Paul Bellamy

|- | '''donaldbyers'''

3/9/2010 8:03:38 PM | I suggest, unless there is a way to trigger it much earlier, that it was not a concern of the programmers of being timely. As on a slow posting topic it may be a month before someone posts a reply. When we log in now you get notified right away that there is a new post to a topic.

Don

Sgt. Donald C. Byers, 613th Bomb Squadron, Togglier, 42-97344 Carrie B II, KIA 08/24/1944.
|- | '''EDanaII'''

3/10/2010 6:18:22 PM | Don's correct on both counts: probably no way (we) can speed it up and given the nature of the forum, the slow turn around is probably just fine. The main reason why I always wanted the forum notifications to be active is for those posts that might sit for weeks until someone shows up with an answer. Of course, I didn't count on YOU in my thinking, Paul. 😉

|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/10/2010 7:51:21 PM | Ta guys,

It's not a huge problem, but I'd have thought the automatic sending of notifications would have been fairly instant, not stored up for transmission at at some random point in the future.

Having said that, with the amount of posts I make here I'd probably be better off unsubscribing to threads before my inbox gets clogged up. 😉

Keep up the good work chaps,
Paul

Paul Bellamy

|- | '''donaldbyers'''

3/10/2010 9:53:53 PM | Like you say Paul as many times you go into the forum anyhow you are aware of new posts sooner anyway. I doub't that I will worry about it. I did have one person ask about it and can't remember who it was but Stevenson sticks in my mind, but again not sure.

Don

Sgt. Donald C. Byers, 613th Bomb Squadron, Togglier, 42-97344 Carrie B II, KIA 08/24/1944.
|- | '''EDanaII'''

3/10/2010 10:05:06 PM | @ Paul

Honestly, Paul, I wouldn't have expected it either, but computers can move in mysterious ways. More to the point, this may be a problem out of my control. It could be a problem of the software that actually sends the emails; stuff is getting queued up and the software may not be accessing the queue fast enough, or the software is dying, leaving stuff in the queue, only to start up later and do it all again.

At this point, I'm concerned that I'm not getting any responses to this thread, so I may switch how the forum processes email messages. This might fix the problem, and then again, it might not. Unfortunately, other than switching the method the forum uses, the rest of the process is out of my control.

Ed.

|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/13/2010 11:20:22 AM | Ta guys.

I've just received 11 notification e-mails simultaneously, covering the last week or so, so I'd assume the system is queueing them up.

All the best,
Paul

Paul Bellamy

|- | '''EDanaII'''

3/13/2010 12:09:44 PM | Yep. I just received a whole bunch too, so the software is clearly queuing them up.

As I mentioned, I may be able to fix this by changing the method the Board uses, but I need the HostMonster's smtp server to complete that. To that end, I've asked Rick to get control of the HostMonster site from Kele. Once done, I'm hoping I can fix this once and for all. Until that is done, however, I'll try and find it separately.

Ed.

|}
