This is straight from my Grandpa's book, so if there is a mistake, it can only be on my Mom and what she copied from his book. Also, my Mom's handwriting is AWFUL, plus she wrote it in magic marker, AND made a copy of it, and gave teh copy, so hard reading/spelling of cities. So, i am sure there is a bit of misspelling below, and apologies for that. Also, I know that his book had aot more info than just theinfo listed below, and my Mom confirmed that, but she only wrote down what is below. Once I get the actual book, will share what I have. He did say majority of his missions were with Knight, but not all of them (as you know). Also, the June 20th 1944 mission, I can say either A)my mom wrote it down wrong, because B)if my Grandpa said he flew on June 20th 1944, he did 🙂

Again, I hope to soon see his actual book, as again, from what I remember he had wrote down more notes...maybe even noted which B-17 he was on??? Again, not sure, but I jsut remember seeing more writing when he showed me his book.

Thanks for teh info Don (gonna have to check my PM's from laptop at work, as I can't get PM's from home computer)

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''EDanaII'''

2/21/2010 2:50:54 PM | OK, Derrick, I don't know how far along you are, or whether or not this will help you, nor have I looked at it completely, but they are building a B-17, so you may find this useful:

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UduaawM_Arw|How to build a WWII Aircraft].

I might have found it beneficial if I'd known about it sooner.

In any case, hope it helps...

|- | '''MaryAlice'''

2/21/2010 7:07:00 PM |
"EDanaII":
OK, Derrick, I don't know how far along you are, or whether or not this will help you, nor have I looked at it completely, but they are building a B-17, so you may find this useful:

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UduaawM_Arw|How to build a WWII Aircraft].

I might have found it beneficial if I'd known about it sooner.

In any case, hope it helps...

Hey, COOL! Thanks. I can tell you that I am still making progress, albeit slow, but IS progress. What I have done is take teh first 5 steps, and ALL of those parts in those steps, and starting painting those parts, and that is where I am right now. Actually have not assembled anything, but just painted a WHOLE bunch of stuff. Man, when working in such small detail, and doing it RIGHT, takes alot of time....ESPECIALLY since I have a 4 and 2 year old, so I have to put up EVERYTHING when I am done, so they don't get their hands on it!!! Hahaha

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''donaldbyers'''

2/21/2010 8:10:13 PM | I am going to have to call the person that is putting mine togeather and see how much longer till I get it. It will be painted but will have no markings on it yet. It's been about 2 years now and he only wanted $50.00 to do it and then he found that I was a vet and siad he wouldn't charge me. I told him I don't think so and will give him $100.00 instead. I couldn't do it as I could have never done one myself.

Don

Sgt. Donald C. And let me tell you, free, $50, $100, hard to say how much it is actually worth, or how you could put a price tag on it. Realistically, to "make money" or do it for a living, putting something like this together, you would ahve to charge an obscene amount, as the hours involved in putting it together is ridiculous. I already have @ 15 hours into it, and you look at what I have done, and looks like probaly 15 MINUTES worth!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I will say that it might be easier, and probaly is, if you have done a couple/few before, and cut down on assembly time quite a bit...I think it is safe to assume, that I will have probaly 100+ hours into before I am done.

Simple things like removing a part for the plastic..it leaves those little "bumps" behind, so you have to trim/cut it down, sand it. I spend @ 15+ minutes on just one of those little "bumps".I cut it down wit a razor blade as close as I can to the actual part, then take some 1000 grit sandpaper to take it down rest of the way.

Yes, time consuming in doing it right. Waiting to see how yours comes out Don....give us some pics when you can...

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

2/27/2010 2:03:34 PM | Hey Don...your Uncle, who was KIA on Aug 24, 1944...My grandpa flew his last mission 6 days before then...Also see your Uncle was in the 613th BS, my Grandpa being in the 615th...just trying to see if maybe they would hav eknown each other?? Granted I know there were ALOT of crew members and such, and hard to say for sure, but teach me something.....Were teh 613th and 615th stationed at the same location? Deenethorpe? Or no? If they were...what are chances of them "hanging out" with another BS?
Again, I know it would be dang near impossible to know if they knew each other, but thought if we started "adding things up" maybe we could put a "maybe" or a "not a chance" tag on it????? That picture you and paul dug up....WOW..what can I say? I mean, thanks does not say enough for what it means to me. Even though it is "just" the tail...it is MUCH more than that to me. To think that my Grandpa was probaly on that plane at that time, is to great for me to even consider that he wasn't...and to think that he was up there, with everyone else, battling for their lives, and our freedom....I mean, seriously..how can you say thanks for that? Sometimes a bit much to try and take in.

It makes me regret not joining our miitary, I can tell you that. I know things turn out for a reason, and there was obviously SOME reason why I was not meant to have joined, but still does not make me regret it some.

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/19/2010 1:06:43 PM |
"donaldbyers":
Have looked through my data and found which dates your grandfather didn't fly with the Knight Crew.

Feb missions did not give each person on aircraft
29 March 1944 2nd Lt. Do we have info on this B-17? Looks like was in service for a good number of missions, with different crews. So, any history/nmaes we know of???

#2, I see that you were able to find the crews that my Grandpa flew with, when NOT with Knight and Mary Alice.
Those dates above, do we have a plane serial number and or name of the B-17 he flew on for March 29, April 13, April 24, April 30, June 20, Jul 4 and July 11?
I can't seem to find the list Don located (where yo can see what crew he flew with?????)

ANY help i can get on this, is GREATLY appreciated, as again, trying to gather all history on Grandpa, and knowing what B-17's he flew on would be fantastic, thanks guys!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|}
