And since my wife and her Dad never really talked about him being in teh military, she has no idea about ANYTHING about it...and would like to know SOMETHING. Like, was he a ?????? Did he earn any medals? Did he serve in a war? He was born in 1929, so you figure he would have served in the Navy @ later 1940's into the 1950's, probaly? Or, did he serve all the way up until????? Again, my wife has no idea.

Also, she THINKS he may have joined teh Coast Guard as well...because of a ring she found of his (her Mom passed away here recently as well). This ring says Coast Guard on it (I have not seen it), but she is not sure if it was his. (does not have reason to think it is someone else's, but again, not 100% sure) Also, she says he had a Tattoo of an Anchor and a Bird, so..??????

So, my question is: Is there a way to find out about his Military background in the Navy? What about Coast Guard?

You guys have been great, and you are my first try at trying to find out this info...figure you guys would know, or could point me in teh right direction.
Thanks again!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''donaldbyers'''

1/31/2010 4:41:30 PM | [http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/standard-form-180.html] Fill out the form and send it in.

Don

Sgt. When I ordered my uncles IDPF file (Individual Death Personnel File) it took 5 months. I don't expect yours to take that long and expect it to be only one or two pages. But it will at least give you a direction to go I believe.

Don

Sgt. Donald C. Yesterday, receieved my Father In Law's military background. So...3 weeks or so?

Let me tell you, info we got was very interesting...from infractions he received (was out of uniform, and recieved 5 extra hours of duty) to the actual copy of his application that he filled out when he joined teh Navy....VERy neat stuff in that packet...ALOT more than I thought we would get. In fact, after we got it, my mom showed up today and we showed her, and she asked if we could do this for my Grandpa (not sure why i didn't think of it) So, got together on teh phone with my grandma, and printed out teh info, getting her to sign tomorrow, and send off on Monday for the history of my Grandpa.

So, THANKS Don!!!!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''donaldbyers'''

2/27/2010 11:29:16 PM | You are welcome and that is why we are here to help and we have to good people on the forum to help do that.

Thanks Don

Sgt. In the short time I have been on here, the knowledge I have gained is just awe striking. From such simple things, that I had NO idea about (what a dispersal is) to pulling military history background, and everything in between..has just been great! So, thanks to all!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|}
