Bob was a co-pilot in Arthur Jetter’s crew in the 613th Squadron, and flew over 30 missions from June-October 1944, I believe on the aircraft “Snicklefritz” as part of Jetter’s crew. I have learned a great deal from the 401st website, and hope to contribute information myself.

Arthur Jetter, my father, died in September 2007. Three years ago, he was interviewed by the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress (something every combat veteran should do). You can see his interview video here:

Yes, their plane was named Snicklefritz. Their crew was formed at training In Salt Lake City, Utah. From Salt Lake City they took a train to Avon Park, Florida, where they trained for 6 weeks in preparation for overseas duty. Then, they went trained at Langley Field, Virginia for 6 weeks then given orders to fly to England. They flew by way of Bangor, Maine; Goose Bay Labrador; Iceland; Scotland and on to England. There the crew was assigned to the 401St Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in Deenethrope, England. Initially, their tour of duty was to be a total of 25 missions but after D-Day this was changed to 30 and then 35 in short order. They were given credit for one extra mission so in effect their required total became 34. Their second mission was to bomb Le Bourget Air Field near Paris for which the Group was awarded a Presidential Citation.

12/27/2009 11:11:15 PM | I have sent you a PM message so you might check that out. See that your dad also flew the Carrie B II. Am wondering if you might have a photo of it? My uncle was KIA on 24 Aug 1944 on this aircraft when it went down on a mission to Weimar Germany. We owe your and other Veterans a lot and sorry to hear of his passing.
