8/25/2011 10:19:57 AM | My Soul Still Follows Where Jesus Leads I always loved the Bible stories that my Mother told. She had a child-like love for Jesus worth its weight in gold. That’s where my faith in God began, at my Mother’s knee. I’ve never wavered in my faith it’s still as strong as it can be! There were times in my younger days when preaching was my goal. I always loved to take the stage and relate what I’d been told. The stories that my Mother told have always served me well. They formed the basis for my faith and the stories I loved to tell! World War II was in full swing, I had to change my plans. The perfect age with a high draft number on whom Uncle made demands. Stories of ‘trench warfare’ which my Uncles told had made me want to fly. I had visions of soaring through the air with Jesus, what better way to die! I enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became an Aviation Cadet. It wasn’t West Point, which I admired, but was as close as I could get. I’d never been off the ground before so training was a thrill. From Piper Cubs to Stearman PT-17 they put us through the mill! Mr. Hassett who trained me well said he was scared as “hell”. My clumsy attempts to fly the plane were stories I never tell. After five hours he hopped out and said, “Shepherd, you’re on your own.” When he hopped out, Jesus got in, and from then on with me He’s flown! My B-17 named “Bottle Baby” was really my worthy pride and joy. Twenty-five times I flew it over Germany although I was just a boy. Jesus was with me and my crew and we never lost our way. With His help we came back home and that’s why I’m here today! Copyright 2011 Jacob Nathaniel Shepherd
