Hey

I was wondering, I have a couple of these pictures from several crew men and they are all with the same background.
Could any one tell me where they were taken and for what reason .
And could I find these pictures in some kind of database ?
Because it seems that they took these pictures of all the men.

Believe these are static backgrounds used for graduation pictures just like in school. Just as some crew pictures were taken in the states during the time they were training togeather.

Hi Swinny:

We have a similar photo (and background) of My Uncle, (613Sq, 401BG) taken in August, 1944 - he and his Crew arrived there in July. He wrote home (at that time) that the 401st Public Affairs or Public Relations office took individual photos like this of (most or all) Air Crewmen and gave them copies to send home if they wished (which he did).

The photos' principal purpose was for use by the Public Affairs or Public Relations office, to send along with notices for publication to the Airman's home-town newspapers (for articles like awards, promotions, MIA, KIA). As example, a 'cropped' version of the photo my Uncle sent home appeared in our home-town newspaper with his MIA notice (he with his 1st.Lt. A.J. Nelson Crew were KIA over Politz, 10-7-44). We've found newspaper notices for most other 'Nelson' Crewmen's MIA or KIA notice - all the same photo background.

Hope this helps on this one. I have no idea if other Bomb Group did this or use the same background.

Epilogue: Having found no official 401st 'Nelson' Crew (together) photo to-date over the years, we - Nelson Crew kin - still hope to find individual photos of all the Crewmen. So far we have several, and hoped the 401BG Ass'n. or other source had a 'pile' of these photos - but none so-far, but we're still looking.

Hey Win

Thank you for clearing that up.
And also thank you very much for your email.
As you maybe know I am making a MACR report about all the 401st planes that didn't make it home.
I wanted to use these kind of pictures on my website.
So I thought these pictures would be found at the archives , but I don't think so now.

Andy
