Or did the 401st always fly the B-17G when they were at Deenethorpe? My dad (Warren Rapp, an MP during the war) seems to remember seeing B-17Fs early on, but maybe he is remembering training missions in the States?

According to Roger Freeman the 401st was the first Bomb Group to arrive in the UK with all B-17Gs.  Some may have actually been modified Fs but thats about it.

Hopefully someone that was their can actually answer that question.  However, if you look under history and assigned aircraft you will find numbers 42-#### and were B17F's.

I would tend to think that the initial aircraft to fly over in late 1943 were B17G models. One of these aircraft 4231072 the Betty J was a G model with a chin turret B17G-1-BO made by Boing and delivered to the group on 7 September 1943. It may have origionally been started as an F but was modified with a chin turret and subsequentely designated as a B17G. There was an F model on the group roster which was used as a "hack" whatever that may mean.
