Other Details: Caught fire and burnt out at the base. Scrapped.
After a normal landing on runway 10, this aircraft showed a burst of flame, apparently under the tail, but probably from the No. 3 engine. The crash crew was away quickly and at first seemed to have put it out, but fire suddenly reappeared and rapidly became too strong to control. All members of the crew evacuated the aircraft unhurt.
Two photos from the National Archives, which confirm '722 didn't have a painted ID Letter on her tail-fin when she was lost.

That's when the interesting ones that I haven't been able to find with the text-based searches turn up. 😉

I'm particularly looking for 'misc' or 'unidentified' Crew and A/C photos to view (in my 'hunt') and your posts are way, way, too fascinating to let pass-by without knowing more (even though you may have already explained it before).

1/26/2009 7:00:34 PM | Footnote.com host the WWII US Air Force photo archive from NARA, viewable online and individually downloadable.
At the bottom of the photo-viewer screen you can open a "filmstrip", which shows the various photo's in that section of the archive, at the end of which is usually a fair number of miscellaneous uncaptioned pictures related to that section.
I've not dared go through the England>Crews untitled section yet, there must be quite a few to plough through.
Then there's the England>(aircraft) Nicknames section....... 😉
I've lost whole DAYS in there already. :mrgreen:

Hi, I am also on a "Hunt," for photos from the Spring/Summer of 1944. Anything of Deenthorpe, especially unidentified photos. I wish there was a place where members could post their photo collections for all to research and enjoy.

1/27/2009 12:35:31 PM | Well Paul , it took me months to download all the pictures regarding the 401st.
Its my believe I now have them all , I have downloaded 676 photo`s in very very good quality .
I am now trying to arrange them but have to trust on the dates that come with the pictures.
If somebody is interested I made a excel file ( with a former file I got from Paul ) with all the numbers and information of every picture I have, putting them on the right date.
I am making a slideshow of them .
But that is going to take a wile.

I am waiting to see what the new site will look like as I am looking for a program that I might be able to use on the website that will show the picture and description that needs to be typed in from info from the NARA which is the back side of the picture,

11/30/2011 3:12:39 PM | As a follow-up it seems the other B-17 that burned out on the ground before entering combat operations, 44-6485, was also assigned to the 612th.
This photo shows her sitting on Dispersal #14, in the 612th Squadron area, with the wind-sock mast and Hangar #2 in the distance.
Here's the Overseas Accident Report Index entry for the loss of '485, which again includes the squadron identity:
