Serial Number: 42-37722
Model: B-17G
Manufacturer: Douglas Aircraft, Long Beach, California
Production Block: B-17G-10-DL
Delivered by Manufacturer: 10 Aug 1943 at Denver
Squadron Code: n/a
Nickname: n/a
Date Assigned to 401st BG: 21 Jan 1944
Date Lost: 28 Jan 1944
Nature of Loss: Ground Accident

Other Details: Caught fire and burnt out at the base. Scrapped.

After a normal landing on runway 10, this aircraft showed a burst of flame, apparently under the tail, but probably from the No. 3 engine. The crash crew was away quickly and at first seemed to have put it out, but fire suddenly reappeared and rapidly became too strong to control. All members of the crew evacuated the aircraft unhurt.

Two photos from the National Archives, which confirm '722 didn't have a painted ID Letter on her tail-fin when she was lost.

All the best,
Paul

Ive gotten into the habit, when using Footnote, to scroll through all the "miscellaneous" uncaptioned photos at the end of each section.
That's when the interesting ones that I haven't been able to find with the text-based searches turn up. 😉

Like this one, 53555AC...........

No title, no caption, just a collage of 401BG jacket art. 🙂

Paul....Swinny....

Footnote?
End of Section?
Can you explain these a bit?

I'm particularly looking for 'misc' or 'unidentified' Crew and A/C photos to view (in my 'hunt') and your posts are way, way, too fascinating to let pass-by without knowing more (even though you may have already explained it before).

Footnote.com host the WWII US Air Force photo archive from NARA, viewable online and individually downloadable.

At the bottom of the photo-viewer screen you can open a "filmstrip", which shows the various photo's in that section of the archive, at the end of which is usually a fair number of miscellaneous uncaptioned pictures related to that section.

I've not dared go through the England>Crews untitled section yet, there must be quite a few to plough through.
Then there's the England>(aircraft) Nicknames section....... 😉

I've lost whole DAYS in there already.

Paul

Hi, I am also on a "Hunt," for photos from the Spring/Summer of 1944. Anything of Deenthorpe, especially unidentified photos. I wish there was a place where members could post their photo collections for all to research and enjoy.

Well Paul , it took me months to download all the pictures regarding the 401st.
Its my believe I now have them all , I have downloaded 676 photo`s in very very good quality .
I am now trying to arrange them but have to trust on the dates that come with the pictures.
If somebody is interested I made a excel file ( with a former file I got from Paul ) with all the numbers and information of every picture I have, putting them on the right date.
I am making a slideshow of them .
But that is going to take a wile.

Andy

You have 10 more pictures than I have which is the collection that I got from the 401st BG that the NARA provided to them. I am waiting to see what the new site will look like as I am looking for a program that I might be able to use on the website that will show the picture and description that needs to be typed in from info from the NARA which is the back side of the picture,

What was in the OS accident report that showed 722 as 612th? This is so I can annotate it. Also supply that with any others identified.

Tks Don

Sorry Don,

I should have been clearer. I don't have the OAR itself, just the index of them.

As above, the index entries are listed by:
Date of accident
Type of aircraft
Serial number of aircraft
Squadron allocation
Group allocation
Home Base or AAF Station
Air Force allocation
Action
Pilot
Location of accident

The 401st OARs indexed for January 1944 for example are:

Date Type Serial Sqdn Group Base AF Action Pilot Country Location
440101 B-17G 42-40002 615BS 401BG 128 8 TAC Lewis, Clyde A ENG Little Staughton/Sta 127
440101 B-17G 42-37928 615BS 401BG 128 8 GAC None ENG Little Staughton/Sta 127
440111 B-17G 42-31090 613BS 401BG 128 8 LAC Piper, Harry L Jr ENG Matlask
440124 B-17G 42-31087 612BS 401BG 128 8 TAC Fox, Gaston M ENG Deenethorpe/Sta 128
440127 B-17G 42-31414 615BS 401BG 128 8 TAC Van Sycle, Leon C ENG Deenethorpe/Sta 128
440128 B-17G 42-37722 612BS 401BG 128 8 DF Sellers, William D ENG Deenethorpe/Sta 128

As a follow-up it seems the other B-17 that burned out on the ground before entering combat operations, 44-6485, was also assigned to the 612th.

This photo shows her sitting on Dispersal #14, in the 612th Squadron area, with the wind-sock mast and Hangar #2 in the distance.

Here's the Overseas Accident Report Index entry for the loss of '485, which again includes the squadron identity:

Date: 44-9-23
Type: B-17G
Serial: 44-6485
Squadron: 612BS
Group: 401BG
Station: 128
Air Force: 8
Fate: MFDF (Mechanical Failure, Destroyed by Fire)
Damage Category: 5 (Total loss)
Pilot: (ground crew)
Location of accident: Deenethorpe/Sta 128

Ta Don,

44-6485 was from block B-17G-50-DL, which we already knew.
I'll keep out of the database for a while to give you a chance to do the changes.
