Service during the War ¶

Donald enlisted on 11 Sep 1943 in Indianapolis Indiana. He trained in the states with the crew of Lt. Melvin S. Fish which had a 10 man crew. Upon arrival to the 401st Bomb Group crews had been downsized to a 9 man crew. Then Cpl. Byers was transferred to Lt. Maxwell Cain crew and assumed the Bombardier/Togglier position.

Donald was born 13 Aug 1922 in Marion County, Indianapolis Indiana and was the second youngest of 14 children. He married Betty Fern Thompson in 1942 and had a daughter Donna Fern Byers (1943).
